Family Friendly Hotels in York

York is a great place, there are lots of attractions and things to do for kids.  York is such a small city, it’s easy to walk around (especially good for smaller legs) and feels so much more friendly than a larger city.   With larger family rooms or interconnecting rooms, there are some great options for families.

Some of the hotels we recommend:

Moxy

Black Horse Ln, York YO1 7NE

We recently stayed at and reviewed the Moxy hotel in York.

Moxy is a vibrant, modern and sociable hotel.  Very clean and very new.  It has a great location on Stonebow/Peasholme Green, right next door to The Black Swan pub –  a five minute walk from the Shambles, so really very central.  It’s slightly set back from the road, and whilst it does not have its own parking, the Q-Park multi-storey is a 3 minute walk away, it’s very secure and you can leave your car there overnight.

Sandburn Hall Hotel

Scotchman Ln, Flaxton, York YO60 7RB

Sandburn Hall Hotel is a newly built four star hotel with a golf course around 7 miles from York City Centre.  It’s spacious and modern with a comfortable country vibe and a touch of luxury.  Excellent restaurant too.  We stayed recently and have given it a comprehensive review with lots of photos!  They have family rooms and adjoining rooms.

The Grand – Spa Hotel in York

Station Rise, York YO1 6GD

The Grand was York’s first 5 Star Hotel.  It’s a beautiful Edwardian hotel in the building of the former headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, with views of the Bar Walls and The Minster.  The rooms are plush and luxurious.  There is an on site spa, with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam and sauna, as well as a relaxation room.  Beauty treatments are available.  The Grand serve an excellent afternoon tea which is definitely worth doing during your visit.  They sometimes do a spa and afternoon tea package that is nice to do.

The luxury spa hotel is less than a four minute walk from York Train Station.

The Principal, York

Station Rd, York YO24 1AA

The Principal York (formerly known as The Royal York Hotel) is an historic Grade II listing building.  Built in 1878 and the North Eastern Railway Company’s flagship luxury hotel.  It is right next to the York Train Station.  The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout in soft shades of grey.

Free WiFi is available through the hotel, and the leisure club includes a sauna, steam room and heated indoor pool. Try the Twilight Afternoon tea that is served in the Garden Room (one of my favourite places in York).  In the summer, Sol Ast takes up residence in the Principal’s gardens, a lovely way to spend a balmy evening after a relaxing spa day.

The York Marriott is around a mile and a half from the city centre of York on Tadcaster Road.  It overlooks the Knavesmire and is very close to York Racecourse.  They have free parking and nice leisure facilities with a swimming pool, jacuzzi, beauty salon and sauna.  They also have a gym and tennis court.

Middlethorpe Hall Hotel and Spa

Bishopthorpe Rd, York YO23 2GB

Middlethorpe Hall is a luxury country house hotel but it is in York itself – just two miles from the city centre.    The hotel was a filming set for Downton Abbey, and it is easy to see why. This is a perfect destination for fans who would like to feel part of that elegant Downton atmosphere!  Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

The hotel has a spa that includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna.  I have been to visit the spa recently and it’s a great extra but could do with some renovation.  Don’t let that put you off though as it’s a beautiful hotel with gorgeous grounds and lots of comfortable public rooms like the one below where you can take (you guessed it) afternoon tea or just have a coffee and read the papers in peace.  The hotel is also in an ideal location for the York Racecourse.

The Parsonage Hotel and Spa

Escrick, York YO19 6LF

The Parsonage Hotel and Spa at Escrick is a 15 minute drive South of York. From their website: “Set in six acres of beautiful formal gardens and only 15 minutes away from the historic city of York, our spa facilities include 5 treatment rooms, a 16 metre swimming pool, jacuzzi, state-of-the-art gymnasium, sauna, stream room, and aromatherapy salt room.”  There is also an excellent Thai restaurant next door if you are staying in the area!

Malmaison York

2 Rougier St, York YO90 1UU

The brand new Malmaison is another hotel with fabulous views of the Bar Walls and the Minster.  In one direction you are close to clubs and bars and in another direction you are a few minutes walk to the Theatre Royal, Betty’s Tea Rooms and some fabulous restaurants.  The Malmaison boats of stylish bedrooms, delicious dining and sassy cocktails.  What I am excited about is the Sky Bar at the top of the building which will have amazing views of the Minster and the rest of the city.

Grays Court

Chapter House St, York YO1 7JH

I have a great fondness for Grays Court as it was part of St John’s University when I studied there in the late Nineties.  I remember fondly my lectures in these beautiful rooms.  It has since been transformed into a boutique hotel with a fine dining restaurant.  They won the Visit England Award for Excellence 2020 for Small Hotel of the Year.   It’s very central with amazing views of the Minster on one side and the Bar Walls on the other.  There are lots of great restaurants and pubs on Goodramgate too.

“The rooms at Grays Court have been lovingly restored to provide a mix of ageless character and modern comfort. From the William IV poster bed of the Willoughby to the double monsoon shower in the Cumberland; delight in the luxury of a stay at Grays Court. From a wonderful family get away to a romantic weekend for two, we have something to suit every occasion.

Judges Court – Hidden Boutique Hotel in York

Coney St, York YO1 9ND

Judges Court is a 15 bedroom city centre townhouse “tucked away in a secret courtyard”, just off Coney Street, right in the very centre of York.  This isn’t one I have personally visited, but I would like to!  I love the look of the decor and it’s in such a fab location.  One of the Luxury King bedrooms was occupied by the honourable Sir William Chapple Knt. Judge of Assize during the trial that was to decide the fate of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin in 1739.  Incidentally, you can visit Dick Turpin’s grave, just a ten minute walk from the hotel in a churchyard on Lead Mill Lane.

Hotel Du Vin

89 The Mount, York YO24 1AX

The Hotel du Vin is a bit further out of the city centre than the other hotels mentioned, but still only a ten minute walk to the centre of York.  The hotel is within a Grade II-listed mansion house, with classic early 19th century architecture and charm.  The Everyman Cinema is just a three minute walk while the Railway Station is a nine minute walk.

“At Hotel du Vin York, you’ll find 44 distinctive rooms and suites, featuring luxurious beds with Egyptian cotton linen, powerful drench showers and roll top baths, flat screen TVs and unique features that have been carefully restored. When you’re ready to leave your haven, you can enjoy dinner at our French and British influenced Bistro, or relax with a cocktail or glass of wine in our bar. ”

The Judge’s Lodging

9 Lendal, York YO1 8AQ

The Judge’s Lodging has a great position in the centre of York, with a beautiful courtyard bar, where you can sit and watch the world go by.  At Christmas, there are often stalls of the York Christmas Market within the grounds.  Another hotel very close to The Theatre Royal as well as The Museum Gardens.

“Rich in detail and history, our rooms offer comfortable and stylish relaxation.  Bespoke furniture and a mix of fabrics, we’ve filled our rooms with characterful details. From cosy doubles to our grand feature rooms, all have beds that have been hand-selected for quality and comfort.  Whether a short or long break, rest in comfort and fall in love with your own private haven.”
