Where are the best burger restaurants in York? We love all different styles of food. My favourite is Thai or Chinese, anything of an Asian persuasion really, but my husband loves a burger! We’ve visited some great restaurants in York that do good burgers – I shall add more reviews and photos as soon as I can!
Bull & Co
58 Walmgate, York YO1 9TL
Bull & Co is a new American style burger and steak restaurant on Walmgate in York. They serve good quality food in good sized portions. Choose from onglet, rib-eye, sirloin or t-bone or from one of their seven signature burgers. Loaded fries and milkshakes complete the nostalgic American vibe.

Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro
27 Swinegate, York YO1 8AZ
We have long been fans of Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro and have visited on and off for many years since the days when they were situated round the corner on Stonegate. We visited recently for lunch and you can see that review here. They have a good selection of burgers in its own ‘Speciality Burger’ section with everything from Plain Burgers to Cajun Blue and Bacon Burgers. Here is one we tried:
Fancy Hanks, York
39 Goodramgate, York, YO1 7LS
Fancy Hanks is a new and welcome addition to York serving American deep South good mood food. They serve classics such as a Double Cheese Burger, Blackened Cajun Chicken as well as a Vegan Corn Burger. They also do some excellent buttermilk fried chicken!
9 Castlegate, York YO1 9RN
Specialising in burgers Burgsy’s make burgers with a handmade patty, fresh onion, gherkins and American mustard. All burgers served with salad and mayo in a brioche bun, and a side of skinny fries and our homemade tomato ketchup. You can choose from traditional beef burgers, chicken burgers, pulled pork burgers or vegetarian burgers. Choose from sides of loaded fries, salads and homemade coleslaw.
The Old House
75 Low Petergate, York YO1 7HY
Just a three minute walk from York Minster, The Old House is a new restaurant from the owners of the award winning Shoot The Bull in Hull. “Join us for a light breakfast, a spot of lunch or an evening meal, choose from our new menu, packed full of locally sourced produce and freshly prepared dishes. At the bar you’ll find 10 craft beers, cask ales, over 20 speciality spirits, artisan gins and a great selection of fine wines, spirits, craft and continental beers.” They serve locally reared Warrendale Wagyu and you can choose from 8oz Flat Iron, 10oz Sirloin, 10oz Ribeye and an 8oz Fillet of Beef. They also serve Shoot The Bull Wagyu Double Stacked Beef Burgers – Classic, BBQ or Truffle Toasted Bretzel Bun with Rainbow Slaw & Fries.
1-3 Coney Street, York YO1 9QL
We visited Joe’s Kitchen when it first opened. It’s very central at the end of Coney Street. It’s light and modern inside and great if you have kids with you too as they have a selection of games for them. I like the sound of the Jalapeno And Emmental Burger.
No 88 Walmgate
88-96 Walmgate, York, YO1 9TL
No 88 Walmgate is the restaurant within the Indigo Hotel on (funnily enough) Walmgate. Ever so slightly outside of the city centre, we enjoyed a good burger here a couple of years ago. Classic food with a Yorkshire twist.
11 High Ousegate, York YO1 8RZ
Byron is an American diner specialising in Hamburgers. “During a four-year stint in America, I ate enough hamburgers to sink the Titanic. My favourite diner was the Silver Top, in Providence, Rhode Island. I would end up there, late at night, frequently a little worse for wear, with two or three friends. We always ordered hamburgers. They were simple, tasty things – a bit messy, made with good quality meat and only the classic adornments: lettuce, tomato, red onion, and maybe a slice of cheese or bacon. The ultimate comfort food, and so satisfying in their simplicity.”
