The Chopping Block

25 Walmgate, York YO1 9TX

The Chopping Block serves traditional French food and is the creation of chef proprietor “Michael Hjort, the founder and owner of Melton’s, one of York’s leading fine dining restaurants.  The A la Carte menu is about carefully prepared food with real flavour and authenticity using Yorkshire produce and Michael’s favourite recipes.  In addition there are daily specials, a great value set menu and homemade bar snacks served in the Ale House below the restaurant.

We are in a 17th century listed building in the centre of York, along with great food, there’s lots of history and a few ghost stories!   In addition to our regular menus, we also serve Traditional Roasts on a Sunday from 12pm until the end of the day.”

Le Cochon Aveugle

37 Walmgate, York YO1 9TX

Le Cochon Aveugle serve a fine dining blind tasting menu for the more adventurous foodie.  “It is a small stripped back restaurant in the heart of York, serving a frequently changing tasting menu.  The contemporary European menu is rooted in classical French techniques, and showcases the very best produce available to the kitchen on each individual day.  Josh Overington and his team prepare, cook and serve the blind tasting menu from his open-plan kitchen, to offer casual fine-dining with an emphasis on using high quality ingredients from his carefully selected farmers and producers.”

Côte’s tagline is “Relaxed all day dining inspired by the brasseries of Paris” and I would agree with that.  They serve breakfast/brunch between 8am and noon Monday to Friday and 9am till 1pm Saturday and Sunday.  They have a good lunchtime and early evening set menu at two courses for £11.95 that includes French classics like steak frites and baked camembert.
