The Grand – 5 Star Hotel in York

Station Rise, York YO1 6GD

The Grand was York’s first 5 Star Hotel.  It’s a beautiful Edwardian hotel in the building of the former headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, with views of the Bar Walls and The Minster.  The rooms are plush and luxurious.  There is an on site spa, with a swimming pool, jacuzzi and steam and sauna, as well as a relaxation room.  Beauty treatments are available.  The Grand serve an excellent afternoon tea which is definitely worth doing during your visit.

Being in the centre of York, there is no on site parking, but the hotel has their own fully secure 24 hour car park that is charged at £25 per night.  The luxury hotel is less than a four minute walk from York Train Station.  The hotel is dog friendly in certain rooms.

The Principal, York

Station Rd, York YO24 1AA

The Principal York (formerly known as The Royal York Hotel) is an historic Grade II listing building.  Built in 1878 and the North Eastern Railway Company’s flagship luxury hotel.  It is right next to the York Train Station.  The hotel is beautifully decorated throughout in soft shades of grey.

Free WiFi is available through the hotel, and the leisure club includes a sauna, steam room and heated indoor pool. Try the Twilight Afternoon tea that is served in the Garden Room (one of my favourite places in York).  In the summer, Sol Ast takes up residence in the Principal’s gardens, a lovely way to spend a balmy evening.

Sandburn Hall Hotel

Scotchman Ln, Flaxton, York YO60 7RB

Sandburn Hall Hotel is a newly built four star hotel with a golf course around 7 miles from York City Centre.  It’s spacious and modern with a comfortable country vibe and a touch of luxury.  Excellent restaurant too.  We stayed recently and have given it a comprehensive review with lots of photos!

Middlethorpe Hall Hotel and Spa

Bishopthorpe Rd, York YO23 2GB

Middlethorpe Hall is a luxury country house hotel but it is in York itself – just two miles from the city centre.    The hotel was a filming set for Downton Abbey, and it is easy to see why. This is a perfect destination for fans who would like to feel part of that elegant Downton atmosphere!  Built in 1699, it was once the home of the famous diarist, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

The hotel has a spa that includes a swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna.  I have been to visit the spa recently and it’s a great extra but could do with some renovation.  Don’t let that put you off though as it’s a beautiful hotel with gorgeous grounds and lots of comfortable public rooms like the one below where you can take (you guessed it) afternoon tea or just have a coffee and read the papers in peace.  The hotel is also in an ideal location for the York Racecourse.

Judges Court – Hidden Luxury Hotel in York

Coney St, York YO1 9ND

Judges Court is a 15 bedroom city centre townhouse “tucked away in a secret courtyard”, just off Coney Street, right in the very centre of York.  This isn’t one I have personally visited, but I would like to!  I love the look of the decor and it’s in such a fab location.  One of the Luxury King bedrooms was occupied by the honourable Sir William Chapple Knt. Judge of Assize during the trial that was to decide the fate of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin in 1739.  Incidentally, you can visit Dick Turpin’s grave, just a ten minute walk from the hotel in a churchyard on Lead Mill Lane.
