Sandburn Hall is a beautiful new hotel, opened in May 2021, just seven miles outside the centre of York. There is a welcoming golf course with a driving range and conference facilities.  It’s also a well known wedding venue and has an excellent restaurant, Tykes.

You will find masses of convenient parking, which is often an issue for York hotels that are in the city centre. The Park and Ride is a ten minute drive from the hotel, which makes life so easy (see my guide on parking in York).  We also noticed a poster for taxi prices: a taxi ride into York will set you back around £17.50 for four or £30 for eight people.

We stayed at the hotel just after Christmas.  It’s tastefully decorated, with lots of comfortable public seating and a snug bar.  There are forty rooms in total, with two very fancy looking suites, premier lake view rooms, accessible rooms, family and interconnecting rooms.

Sandburn Hall Hotel York – Review

We visited with our teens and had two Signature Rooms, one twin and one double.  The rooms are large but feel cosy in a modern country style.

All beds (unless twins) are super king as standard, which I love. We also got two pillows and a cushion each, perfect for a pre-dinner lounge on the bed!

The TVs are large flat screen SMART TVs with Freeview, apps (think BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub etc).  You can cast from your phone or tablet, so can binge on Netflix from your bed. Speaking of Netflix, Bridgerton fans might be interested to know that Castle Howard (the setting for the home of The Duke of Hastings) is just a 10 minute drive away.

If, like me, you don’t travel anywhere without a ton of tech, you will be happy to know that there is an abundance of USB points in the room (8 in our room in total!).

Our room had a small dressing area with a large mirror. The wardrobe lights up when you open the door and within it you will find an iron with ironing board as well as a mini safe and hairdryer.

The hospitality area has a kettle, mugs, glasses and plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. There is a mini fridge with bottled water and fresh milk (much nicer to have fresh milk as well as being better for the environment).

The bathroom is large with a bath and and over-bath shower. The Noble Isle toiletries smell wonderful!  Lots of room and very comfortable.

We were very impressed by Tykes Restaurant.  Although in the past we have had it recommended to us, we hadn’t actually managed to visit.  I have reviewed dinner in the restaurant as a separate post here.  We also tried out breakfast during our stay and again were very impressed.  On the day we visited the hotel was fairly quiet, being the day after New Year’s Day when most had just checked out!  The breakfast was partly self serve and partly served at the table.  I think that during busier times, the breakfast is all self serve.

The breakfast was excellent and included a Full English, tea, coffee and juice, a toast station and pastries and cereal.

All were good quality, generous and quickly topped up too.  We were that impressed, we are already planning to return for breakfast when the kids are back at school!

All in all a fabulous, comfortable stay in a lovely rural location, but with easy access to York.  Beautiful décor and great food!

We were invited to stay and review the hotel, as always, all opinions are my own.
