Chapter House St, York YO1 7JH
I have a great fondness for Grays Court as it was part of St John’s University when I studied there in the late Nineties. I remember fondly my lectures in these beautiful rooms. It has since been transformed into a boutique hotel with a fine dining restaurant. They won the Visit England Award for Excellence 2020 for Small Hotel of the Year. It’s very central with amazing views of the Minster on one side and the Bar Walls on the other. There are lots of great restaurants and pubs on Goodramgate too. Why not indulge in a romantic four poster bed?
“The rooms at Grays Court have been lovingly restored to provide a mix of ageless character and modern comfort. From the William IV poster bed of the Willoughby to the double monsoon shower in the Cumberland; delight in the luxury of a stay at Grays Court. From a wonderful family get away to a romantic weekend for two, we have something to suit every occasion.

Judges Court – Hidden Romantic Hotel in York
Coney St, York YO1 9ND
Judges Court is a 15 bedroom city centre townhouse “tucked away in a secret courtyard”, just off Coney Street, right in the very centre of York. This isn’t one I have personally visited, but I would like to! I love the look of the romantic décor and it’s in such a fab location. One of the Luxury King bedrooms was occupied by the honourable Sir William Chapple Knt. Judge of Assize during the trial that was to decide the fate of the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin in 1739. Incidentally, you can visit Dick Turpin’s grave, just a ten minute walk from the hotel in a churchyard on Lead Mill Lane.

The Golden Fleece proudly claims to be the ‘Most Haunted’ pub in York. “A ghost named One Eyed Jack, wearing a 16th Century red coat and carrying a pistol, has been seen in the bottom bar.” The Golden Fleece is a quirky, narrow building that looks squeezed in – but goes back a long way.
