If you are looking for a cosy and contemporary wine bar in York then you have several to choose from.  You can visit for bistro style food, an intimate atmosphere or you can treat yourself to paired wine and food flights.  Have a look at some of York’s wine bars.

Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro

27 Swinegate, York YO1 8AZ

We have long been fans of Oscar’s Wine Bar and Bistro and have visited on and off for many years since the days when they were situated round the corner on Stonegate.  We visited recently for lunch and you can see that review here.  Oscar’s have a happy hour from 5-7pm Sunday to Thursday and 4.30-6.30pm on a Friday where you can get a pitcher of Pimms, Woo Woo or Sangria for £11.

Pairings Wine Bar

28 Castlegate, York, YO1 9RP

Pairings Wine Bar is tucked away on Castlegate behind the Coppergate Shopping area.  It’s a lovely elegant place to eat and drink or indulge in a decadent and delicious wine tasting flight or food and drink pairing.  Ideally situated just a few minutes walk from the Grand Opera House, I’ve partaken of their ‘Yorkshire Board’ (local cheeses, pork pie, sourdough and honey) post theatre trip before.  I’ve also tried one of their food and drink pairing experiences, that pair different drinks with small plates from their menu.  I loved it – and would definitely recommend.

Lucia Wine Bar and Restaurant

13 Swinegate Court East, York, YO1 8AJ

Lucia has recently undergone a £500,000 refurbishment in January 2020.  It’s a large Italian restaurant and wine bar in the centre of York close to The Minster.  They have lots of floor space including an outdoor heated courtyard, perfect for the warmer months.

Plonkers Wine Bar

5 Cumberland Street, York, YO1 9RD

Another wine bar very close to the Grand Opera House in York.  Plonkers is a friendly, family run wine bar and bistro.  Part of the Riverside Quarter in York, they have an outside riverside area – particularly vibrant in the summer.

Impossible York

3 St. Helen’s Square, York YO1 8QN

Impossible York is housed in the beautiful building that what was originally Terry’s Chocolate shop in St Helen’s Square.  As well as breakfast, lunch and dinner and a fabulous weekend bottomless brunch, they also do some delicious sounding cocktails like the Enchanted Rose (gin, rose syrup, rose bitters and lemon) and the one I’d like to try – the Terry’s Orange Martini (York Chocolate and Orange Gin, Mozart dark chocolate liqueur, Creme de cacao and Terry’s Chocolate Orange).

See our full review of the bottomless brunch at Impossible York here.
