Enchanting harmonies beneath flickering flames: A timeless celebration of Christmas with our mesmerizing candlelit concert and captivating string quartet. Big Christmas Concert with Alistair Griffin

The 8th, 9th, 15th and 16th of December 2023 – 7.30-10.30pm

Taking place at Q Church (9 Priory St, York YO1 6ET).  A brass band will play you in, then Alistair Griffin’s Big Christmas Concert will take you on a musical journey from acoustic versions of traditional carols through to Wizard, Slade and The Pogues.  Sing along and sip mulled wine whilst enjoying the fairytale of old York.

Let there be Light! Christmas at the Bar Convent

Gather your loved ones for a visit to the Bar Convent this festive season as our historic house becomes aglow with a twinkling tree, dazzling decorations, and an exciting new luminous installation as part of this year’s Christmas experience ‘Let there be Light!’.

A brand-new light installation will take centre-stage against the befitting backdrop of our stunning C18th Chapel this Christmas. ‘Hope: Shadow and Light’ is a collaborative community work of art that not only responds to the Bar Convent’s Christmas theme but is part of a global drawing campaign originating in Viborg, Denmark; one of York’s fellow UNESCO Creative Cities of Media Arts. The project, in partnership with York arts charity, New Visuality, and installation artist, Nick Walters will see more than 200 drawings from 15 countries on five continents projected in the Bar Convent’s Chapel dome alongside work created in York as part of #DrawWithDenmark – Green Together 2023 Campaign.

A Baroque Christmas with York Gin

Mansion House, York

Eboracum Baroque are delighted to return to the majestic York Mansion House for a festive concert of Baroque music in collaboration with our good friends, York Gin.

The programme features seasonal vocal and instrumental works including arias from Handel’s Messiah, music for Trumpet and recorder, and traditional French Christmas carols by Charpentier and Lalande.

We’re delighted to be working with York Gin again. Enjoy a delicious drink of multi award winning gin on arrival in the 18th century splendour of the Mansion House. This promises to be an evening full of festive cheer!

York Christmas Market is a lovely thing to do in York at Christmas. The market stretches all the way down Parliament Street and into St Sampson’s Square, with all sorts of stalls selling gifts and food from cute wooden chalets.

Sparkly Christmas Gin Tastings

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland

Dates for 2023 to be announced

Yorkshire’s Winter Wonderland is staged in the grounds of the Mcarthur Glen Designer Outlet at Fulford on the outskirts of York. It has a huge festive outdoor ice rink, overlooked by an atmospheric Alpine style café, vintage funfair and the opportunity to take the kids to visit Santa. There is no entry fee, you pay for each attraction separately.

The Mansion House

The year before last, The Mansion House was open to the public and decorated as a Gingerbread House.  Hopefully that is happening again this year.

The Mansion House is right in the centre of York and a visit here could easily be combined with a visit to the York Christmas Market or even a festive afternoon tea at Betty’s.

Thors Tipi

Thor’s Tipi is a gorgeous pop up Nordic tent in the gardens of the Principal Hotel. They sell street-food, hot seasonal drinks and cool cocktails.

It’s a perfectly decadent place to take a break from all your York Xmas shopping!

Christmas at York Castle Museum

The Castle Museum is a great place to visit at Christmas. Their Victorian Street, Kirkgate looks particularly Dickensian in its festive finery. They often stage A Christmas Carol here and you can also take the kids to visit Santa.

Wander through our famous Victorian street, Kirkgate, as Christmas arrives with a blanket of festive snow on the historic cobbles. Enjoy the charming period trimmings that adorn the street and take a peek at an exciting range of historical decorations and objects, all from the museum’s collection, in our stunning shopfronts. With a variety of free family friendly Christmas activities on offer, there’s something for all ages to enjoy.

As well as experiencing the Christmas cheer on Kirkgate, visitors can step back in time as they stroll through our popular Period Rooms, from a 17th century dining room to a 1980s kitchen, all embellished with authentic decorations.

Pantomimes and Festive Theatre

It does not get any more festive than a panto at Christmas, and in York we have plenty of choice. Both the Theatre Royal and The Grand Opera House stage pantomimes at Christmas. Also check what’s on at The Barbican and the Joseph Rowntree Theatre.

Piglets Adventure Farm Park

Piglets runs a very popular Christmas special every year, where you take a magic sleigh ride through the forest to visit Santa’s Magical workshop.
