You might think that the Wizard Walk of York is just for kids. While the kids will absolutely love it, I am here to tell you that you will too! We joined the tour recently with two teenagers who you might not consider to be the target audience, but I have to say they loved it. Not only that, but we also loved it.
Now, for full disclosure, we have followed The Wizard of York in one way or another for many years. When we first came across him he performed at children’s parties and in fact did a wizard themed party for our son’s 6th birthday – our son is 17 in a few weeks! Here he is, mortified that I made him get a picture with the wizard (which everyone can, at the end of the tour).
You can still book the wizard for private birthday party tours too.
We have also seen the wizard in various forms in shows and performances over the years. In a nutshell, we are big fans. He is a wonderful entertainer, never breaks character and the children (and parents) absolutely adore him.
So, I know you will want to know what form the Wizard Walk of York takes and I’m here to tell you. The tour starts at the bottom of the Shambles opposite the Golden Fleece pub. The Wizard arrives in all his fabulous wizardy attire and instantly captivates his audience. The tour then starts in earnest, with you following him from spot to spot in search of magical beasts.
At each stop, the wizard performs magic alongside telling some fabulously silly jokes. You will laugh, and groan in equal measure, but you will be entertained! (Just look at the expression of the little girl above when the wizard’s wand accidentally goes up his nose!)
He carries a step ladder with him and climbs it so that everyone can see him – no-one is left out. He also involves as many children (and adults) in the show as possible, so you do feel part of it.
The tour lasts around an hour and a quarter. If you are coming to York with kids, then this tour is a complete must – you will all love it!
You can also add a magic wand pack for the kids to make it extra special.
Another treat you can try is the Wizard Walk of York ice-cream at Loopy Scoops on Church Street.
It comes with a red sherbet cone and includes a golden coin, a chocolate wand and a chocolate frog. Very tasty it was too! You can follow the Wizard Walk of York on Facebook here.
