Kirkgate is the reconstructed Victorian Street in the heart of the York Castle Museum. It has been beautifully decorated for Christmas with festive garlands and twinkling lights.
There is also a beautiful Christmas tree which is definitely the star attraction and everyone wants their photograph taken beside it!
Talking of photo opportunities. Don’t miss the chance to sit in the Santa’s sleigh and have your photo taken. It will make a lovely Christmassy photograph for your memories.
Many of the little shops on the street are open and you can call in and look at what they would have sold.
There are also costumed actors walking up and down the street who will chat to you.
When we visited, a traditional Father Christmas in his green gown appeared and captivated the street. He chatted to the visitors and talked of feasts, games, dancing and songs.
On a different day you might listen to Victorian carol singers or even see Scrooge telling the story of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. You can check the days and times of when these activities take place here.
Of course, while you are there, you can see the rest of the York Castle Museum which is a fabulous museum. There are so many parts to it, including the old prison cells, but really at the moment it’s all about Christmas and it really is a fabulous place to visit at this time of year.
We were invited to visit and write about the Castle Museum. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.
