Cheap places to eat in York – there are some great places to eat in York that won’t break the bank. This is the place where I put all the deals I find when out and about, like buy one get one free, set meals and specials – as well as genuinely good but cheap restaurants in York. I do try and keep up to date, but please do check all the details with each venue before you book. Also, let me know if you have spotted a great deal that I don’t mention!
The Whippet Inn
15 North St, York YO1 6JD

The Whippet Inn is a steak and alehouse with a fine line in seafood too. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, tucked away as it is on North Street, but once you have been you will return. Lovely, friendly staff look after you in a comfortable and relaxed environment with a stylish and quirky decor. The food is fresh, imaginative and great quality.
The menu offers such delights as ‘Picanha- 32 Day Dry Aged, Triple Cooked Chunky Chips, Garlic & Thyme Confit Vine Tomato, Green Peppercorn & Brandy Sauce’, or ‘Poached Sea Trout Fillet with Olive Oil Potato, Puffed Fish Skin, Aromatic Herb Powder, Brown Shrimp Butter & Pea Purée’.

Piccolino

Piccolino is an upscale Italian restaurant situated on Ouse Bridge. They have an extensive selection of shellfish and seafood dishes as well as a good range of steaks from both the UK and Canada. Excellent service and attractive decor make this a great Italian restaurant for a special occasion.

Lucia Wine Bar and Restaurant

Lunchtime Set Menu – Two drinks and two main courses for £20. Monday to Friday 12-4 (excludes bank hols).
Lucia has recently undergone a £500,000 refurbishment in January 2020. It’s a large Italian restaurant and wine bar in the centre of York close to The Minster. They have lots of floor space including an outdoor heated courtyard, perfect for the warmer months. I recently visited for lunch and had this marvellous antipasti platter.
The Cut and Craft

The Cut and Craft do a 10oz Flat Iron Steak for £10.
As well as baby back ribs and burgers, The Cut and Craft serve premium steak cuts from 30 day aged British beef. You can choose from Rib-eye, Sirloin and Fillet. “Located in St. Sampsons Square, a historic part of York’s city centre, The Cut & Craft is an informal steak & beer restaurant specialising in delicious flat iron steak and craft beers. We have two Slug and Lettuce in York, but it’s just the one on Back Swinegate that does the 50% discount offer. Slug isn’t hugely expensive anyway so this makes a great value lunch. Below is a picture I quickly snapped a while ago – we ordered two sharing platters between four. A great place for cheap eats in York on a Monday.
The Mulan

Monday-Saturday, a two course lunch will set you back just £7.20 while a three course Sunday lunch £9.90 per head.
The Mulan Chinese Restaurant is not in the city centre – in fact it’s on more of an industrial estate. This does mean very easy parking and a good sized premises, It’s very near the Vue Cinema and Ten Pin Bowling. It’s my favourite Chinese restaurant in York. Courteous service, nice surroundings and excellent food. If you are looking for a lunchtime meal then the lunch special menu absolutely can not be beaten. Monday-Saturday, a two course lunch will set you back just £7.20 while a three course Sunday lunch £9.90 per head.

The Old Bank
6-12 Lendal, York YO1 8AA
The last time I was in I spotted a burger and a drink deal for less than a tenner.
The Old Bank is on Lendal, opposite Judges Lodgings. Recently reopened after a big refurbishment, the decor is modern and comfortable. There are several booths with individual TV’s, plug sockets and USB chargers, making it a perfect spot for a recharge on a lunchtime and great for kids. Great affordable option.

Turtle Bay

Monday to Friday until 3pm
Turtle Bay serve Caribbean style food in a cool and stylish bar and restaurant. They also do a breakfast club every day between 10 and 11 where you can get 2 for 1 on their breakfast dishes.
