The Old Bank on Lendal (that used to be Varsity) recently went through a complete refurbishment. The pub is modern and comfortable inside, with lots of light thanks to large glass walls at the back of the building.
There is an array of tables – we were lucky enough to bag a spacious booth. Each booth has its own TV. Ours was tuned to Sky Sports, but all the TVs are individually controlled so you can watch whatever station you would like. I think this makes The Old Bank perfect for families with younger children. (Note that pub with it’s plug socket and USB charging point – perfect for charging tablets and phones!)
We called in at lunchtime. The pub has a nice relaxed atmosphere and makes a good venue for a reasonably priced lunch or lunchtime pint.
We ordered beer-battered mozzarella and jalapeno sticks with a tomato salsa.
and garlic bread topped with cheese:
Lunch at The Old Bank, York – Review
Then for main courses we chose the Chip Shop Platter (Cod and chips, Served with a battered sausage, chip shop curry sauce, peas or mushy peas and bread and butter)
And also the Grilled 10oz Gammon, topped with a fried egg and grilled pineapple and served with chips, half a grilled tomato, peas and beer-battered onion rings.
They have a burger and drink deal. Choose any burger (beef, chicken or soya), choose your size (double, triple or quadruple), and then choose a topper like Reggae Reggae jerk BBQ sauce, American hot buffalo and crispy onion, or classic cheese and bacon. Then choose a soft or alcoholic drink (from a large list) for less than a tenner!
Downstairs there is lots more space as well as a large beer garden for nice days.
The Old Bank on Lendal is a great budget pub lunch in comfortable surroundings in the centre of York. I understand they also do excellent (and great value) breakfasts! A bacon butty and a cup of tea for £3.29 – you can’t go wrong!
