The Stone Trough Inn is near Kirkham Abbey, not far off the A64 near Malton. It’s a beautiful and surprisingly roomy country pub, just made for lazy Sunday lunches (or lunches or dinners any day, but you get my drift!).  It’s as equally attractive inside as it is outside.

I don’t think you can beat a country pub for a good roast Sunday dinner and I was not disappointed at The Stone Trough Inn.  There were three starters to choose from, I chose the parsnip and blue cheese soup which was delicious, with some lovely crunchy croutons on top.

My friend chose the deep fried brie with cranberry sauce.

For main courses, I really wanted to try the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.  For me, this is the king of the Sunday lunch!

Roast Beef Sunday Lunch

The beef was divinely tender, and the Yorkshire pudding light and crisp.   You can see there was a carrot served on my plate and then vegetables (spring greens and beans and cauliflower cheese) were served separately.  The portion of vegetables seen was shared between two.

My friend then opted for another great pub classic and another favourite of mine – steak and ale pie.

Steak and Ale Pie and Chips

The steak and ale pie was served as an individual pie with chunky chips, roasted carrot and cauliflower cheese.  It came with its own pot of gravy.

Finally, my daughter chose traditional fish and chips.

Fish and Chips

I love the cute ceramic ‘takeaway box’ plate.  Fish and chips served with mushy peas, tartar sauce and a wedge of lemon.

For dessert we sampled sticky toffee pudding:

Key Lime Cheesecake, which I was very impressed with as I make cheesecakes myself and can be quite critical of others!

And Chocolate Brownie:

The chocolate brownie was lovely and light, not stodgy like some can be.

The Stone Trough Inn has a huge beer garden area with lots of tables (and lots of space between tables). The pub is in such a beautiful spot and the views of the neighbouring countryside are lovely. It would be ideal on a warm Summer’s evening, and equally ideal, cosying up in front of a roaring fire on a chilly winter’s night.

The Stone Trough Inn is just a 14 mile drive from York. Perfect for a run out into the country or as a stop off on the way back from the coast.   Thoroughly recommended.
