Clifford’s Tower is an iconic site in York, the largest surviving part of York Castle. It’s beautiful all year round, but definitely worth visiting in March and April when the whole mound is covered in daffodils.

In 2022 the inside of Clifford’s Tower was renovated to include a free-standing roof deck, new internal walkways and historic stairwells.

We visited on a glorious sunny day and the views are incredible.

You can listen to ‘fictional historic characters tell the tower’s tales, from the Harrying of the North and the tragic anti-Jewish pogrom of 1190 to the fire of 1684.’

There are lots of steps up to the tower and inside too, so it’s not really one if you have mobility issues, but worth a visit to take photos from the outside regardless.

It’s definitely one for the ‘must do’ list – even better if you have an English Heritage membership as then it is free to do.

Actually, you could consider buying a membership when you visit. There are a few places not too far away that would make it worthwhile (I am thinking Whitby Abbey and Scarborough Castle – though there are plenty more places). It’s also a good buy if you are travelling around the country as you get free entry to lots of places then too.
