Rudy’s is a new Napoletana pizza place that recently opened on High Ousegate. We walked past a couple of weeks ago, and it smelled amazing, so I was very pleased to be invited to try it out.
The restaurant itself is larger than you think, and stretches a long way back. We visited on a Thursday evening to find the place buzzing with guests. The decor is a mix of modern and industrial, with concrete floors and exposed wiring. The pizza chefs are at the centre of the restaurant and you can watch them work from afar – or you can even sit around on high stools (I hate high stools but clearly some (strange) folk like them!). Though I can see the attraction of watching the chefs as they work.
There are blackboards around the restaurant advertising pizza and drinks specials.
We ordered a pizza each from the regular menu and a side salad. I have to say that both pizzas were excellent. Rudy’s make their dough fresh every day using the ‘rules and disciplines of True Neapolitan Pizza’. Considering that Rudy’s is a chain, the pizza definitely tasted authentic, with 00 flour, San Marzano tomatoes, Fior di Latte Mozzarella, and baked in a traditional Neapolitan oven.
My husband chose the Carni pizza (San Marzano tomato, Fior di Latte, Grana Padano, salame finocchiona, salame piccante, wild boar salame, basil, e.v olive oil).
I went for the Triple Pepperoni (San Marzano tomatoes, Fior di Latte, Napoli pepperoni, British pepperoni, Calabrian pepperoni, stracciatella (burrata heart) and chilli honey). It was a really excellent pizza and so tasty. If you like a bit of a spicier pizza, then I would recommend adding an extra topping of roquito peppers (I do love me some roquito peppers!). I did like the different styles of pepperoni and the Fior di Latte was something (good) that I haven’t tried before.
We also ordered a Caesar salad on the side. This was very fresh with no anchovies (a very good thing in my opinion) and garlic and rosemary croutons. Not entirely sure how I felt about the rosemary on the croutons if I am honest, but I loved the rest of it (plenty of Grana Padano, which is how it should be).
Finally, we shared a Tiramisu for dessert, which was very nice. I also liked the sound of the Rudy’s Rum Baba (A light sponge cake soaked in a boozy rum, served with cream and a cherry syrup) and would try that next time.
I’ll paste photos of the menu and prices below so that you can get an idea of what is available and prices.
We were invited to visit and review. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.
