Jimmy’s is a new bar and restaurant that has opened on Petergate, in York. They have two floors each with dining areas and bars, as well as an outdoor covered and heated courtyard. They serve breakfast and brunch from 10am until 3pm and then a ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll BBQ’ in the evening.
Full disclosure: I really wanted to review their bottomless brunch, but it’s only served on a weekend (and I can only do mid-week!). So, for a sneaky way around this, we ordered items that feature on both the regular brunch and the bottomless brunch menus – so that all our photos are of what is available on the bottomless brunch. At least this way I was actually sober all the way through the review (for a change!).
Jimmy’s Bottomless Brunch
So, Jimmy’s bottomless brunch offering includes one dish from their bottomless brunch menu (it’s not the same as their regular brunch menu). It also includes bottomless drinks from a choice of Martini, Jimmy’s Lager, Prosecco and Gin and Tonic. My friend who was not driving (unlike me) sampled their gin and tonic and then later on the Jimmy’s Lager. During a bottomless brunch your drinks are unlimited!
For the brunch dish, I chose to try the All Day Breakfast which included bacon, sausage, mushroom, beans, fried egg, hash browns, black pudding and tomato. You know how sometimes on a full English the sausage is a bit low budget and more sawdust than meat? Well that wasn’t the case at Jimmy’s. The sausage was excellent (and in my role of brunch reviewer I have tried a few sausages – no smut intended!). It was sweet and savoury and in a class of its own. The bacon was a little on the chewy side but the flavour more than made up for it. Again there was a sweetness (maple perhaps?) and smokiness that gave it a really unique flavour and one I would definitely return for.
We were advised when seated that there were no avocados available but that if we wanted one of the dishes that had avocado in them, we could substitute something else like bacon or sausage if we wished. This was fine with us and so my friend ordered what would have been Poached Eggs and Avocado and instead became Poached Eggs and Bacon, served with cherry tomatoes on a toasted bagel.
We also (for the purposes of this review, and not just in an attempt to get ‘breakfast pudding’), ordered the Stack of Fresh Fluffy Pancakes, with Berries. Now, although we were impressed with our savoury dishes, we were not as impressed with the pancakes. The berries came in a compote form and were a little tart and overpowering (again, no smut intended). They were also served with peanuts that were not mentioned on the menu.
All in all though, I think you’d have a great bottomless brunch at Jimmy’s. The staff are young and friendly and there is a nice laidback vibe to the place. There would be no need to worry about getting a little loud after your fifth Martini (seriously though, take it easy on the Martini’s, they are lethal!). Great music, with impromptu karaoke from the staff too. Oh – and ask them about their sausage roll eating kitchen ghost….
We have also reviewed the bottomless brunch offerings at Slug and Lettuce and Las Iguanas in York.
