If you’re wanting a tour that’s a bit quirky and fun, The Witches and History Walking Tour is a great one to try.
It’s not your typical history tour—think spooky stories, dramatic flair, and a lot of laughs, all wrapped in the atmospheric streets of York.
The guides are fully in character (witch hats and all) which is really handy so you can see them when you are following them on a crowded street.
Our tour was taken by Willow who was part actor, part historian, and a full-on entertainer. The tour is fun and surprisingly heartfelt, mixing folklore, actual witch trial history, and some good old ghostly tales.
You’ll walk up iconic spots like the Shambles and around York Minster, as well as down lesser-known snickets and streets, which is perfect if you are more unfamiliar with York.
Most of the audience were adults but it would be fine for children too. It’s creepy enough to be exciting, but not too scary.
The tour starts off in Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate and lasts about 75 minutes, so it’s short enough to keep everyone’s attention but still packed with stories.
There are three tours a day, ours was mid afternoon, but I can imagine it to be even more atmospheric on an evening!
Our tour was part of a press visit.
