York is considered, by many, to be one of the most beautiful and interesting cities in the UK. It has stunning architecture, very impressive restaurants and a history that goes all the way back to the Vikings – and beyond.

There’s always plenty to do during the day – a walk around York Minster, checking out the Jorvik Viking Centre – and maybe taking a boat ride down the river. But what do you do in the evening?

Well, planning the perfect night out in York isn’t easy as there’s so much to choose from – you can enjoy the perfect blend of history, culture, food, drinks – and entertainment. Not sure where to get started? Then here’s our itinerary that we think manages to capture everything that this stunning city has to offer.

An Evening Stroll Before Dinner

If you’re not all walked out with all the daytime sightseeing, then what better way to start your evening than with a nice, leisurely stroll through historic city streets? If you haven’t already done so, you have to head to the Shambles, which is the city’s famous medieval street, and it’s at its best as dusk falls. Its narrow lanes have unique overhanging timber-framed buildings that create an atmosphere that is completely and quintessentially York.

Once you’ve done walking and worked up an appetite, you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the restaurant and dining options. York is renowned for its first-class restaurants. Depending on your tastes, you’ll find all different dining options, from traditional British pub grub to something a little more international. However – it can get busy there, so don’t leave it all to chance! We’d definitely recommend you decide where you want to go in advance and book a table beforehand, especially if you’re there on the weekend.

Live Music at The Stone Roses Bar

Who doesn’t like a bit of live music? Well, if you do, then after dinner, you can take in York’s pretty impressive music scene. In particular, there’s The Stone Roses Bar, which you’ll find at 4 King Street, which is a really popular venue that has a brilliant atmosphere and, of course, pays tribute to that iconic band. You can enjoy a mix of live performances and classic tracks – and it’s definitely a must-visit for anyone who loves their music.

Try Your Luck at the Casino

If you’re someone who enjoys a spin on one of the many recommended UK slots sites, then you’re in luck… hopefully literally!

No night out would be complete without a touch of excitement – especially if there’s a casino involved! If you fancy it, head over to Admiral Casino at 20-21 High Ousegate where you’ll enjoy quite the gaming experience. Open until very late, you’ll be able to try your luck on all different slot machines and electronic games – all in a very luxurious setting. Whether you consider yourself a more experienced player or you’re giving it a go for the very first time, This could be a great way to round off your evening – especially if lady luck is on your side.

Late-Night Drinks at Evil Eye Lounge

If you’ve won a bit at the casino – or you’re simply not ready to head back yet and you fancy a nightcap, then check out the Evil Eye Lounge on Stonegate, which has become famous for its highly impressive and pretty tasty cocktail menu. This one’s a favourite with both the locals and the visitors – and it’s a great place to unwind after an eventful – and possibly very tiring night out.

Our Tips for a Great Night Out

Ready to go? Then here are some of our top tips…

  • Transportation: You’ll be pleased to know that York City centre is completely walkable, so you’ll be able to walk between venues pretty easily – although Taxis are also readily available if you’ve got achy legs and you can’t be bothered.
  • Dress Code: Although most places have a fairly relaxed dress code, make sure you check in advance.
  • Reservations: We’d always recommend you make reservations where necessary and where possible – especially if you’re there at the weekend!

There you have it! Hopefully, if you follow this itinerary, you’ll have a night to remember – for all the right reasons.
