Have you been to The Marrakesh on Low Ousegate yet?  It’s a simply beautiful restaurant serving gorgeous Moroccan food.  I love trying new and different food, so was excited to be invited to visit and review.  We were greeted warmly at the door and seated in a cosy corner in the window (I would recommend this table as the lights are pretty and you can sit and watch the world go by).

To start with I have to say how fabulously the restaurant is decorated.  You can get an idea of this from my photographs but it is so much better in real life with lots of jewel-like colours, and then the bright fairy lights in the window.

There is a room upstairs that is equally as beautiful and would be perfect for a private function too (in my opinion!).

I also must mention that The Marrakesh have two set menus, one for lunch and one for dinner.  The lunch set menu is for two courses and a soft drink and is priced at £15.95, while the evening set menu is two courses for £21.95 or three course for £25.45.  You can see the dishes included here.

We weren’t sure what to order (as everything sounded good) but were guided by the manager who clearly has a passion for the food they serve.  To begin with we tried the Marrakesh Traditional Mezze which is a great way to try a little bit of everything, and included things like grilled halloumi, kofta briouat and hummus.

This was served with these cute heart shaped flat breads.

For our main course we tried the Tanjia Marrakshiya, a traditional Moroccan Beef stew served with couscous or a homemade Moroccan roll.

This was my absolute favourite and came with big chunks of beef.  I’d also recommend the homemade bread (served warm!).

We also tried the Kofta Tajine, which is beef meatballs topped with a fried egg and served with rice.

A third dish was the Chicken Tfaya Couscous which was slow cooked chicken with sweet caramelised onions and raisins.  I really enjoyed the savoury and sweet combo of this!

We had sides of homemade bread (with sesame seeds on top and served with black olive butter – so nice I could just have eaten this on its own to be honest!), coucous and rice.

We also tried a fig and walnut dish (but I am afraid I don’t know the name of this!).

For pudding we plumped for the baklava:

and the Jawhara which I had never heard of before but was beautiful and created from layers of pastry filled with mascarpone.  If you like a simple custard slice, then you will love this.  Plus, it was huge!

We finished off with some Moroccan mint tea, poured in the traditional fashion in this beautiful tea set!

We were invited to visit and review, but as always, all opinions are my own.
