Last year we tried out Batanga Mexican Restaurant and although I wrote up this review on Facebook I never added it to the site, so I am doing that (somewhat belatedly!) now. Incidentally if you don’t follow me on Facebook, you can do that here.
The prices still seem to be the same as I have mentioned on their website.

I don’t even know how I came across it to start with. Perhaps it was when browsing Google Maps, but I love Mexican food and was intrigued because I hadn’t heard of it.

I had a look at their website and I have to say – it could do with some work. Equally there is nothing on their Facebook page. However, in spite of all this, they must be doing something right as they have some excellent reviews.

I felt that there was a possibility that I had discovered a hidden gem but equally it might have been a disaster.
It’s down a little alley off Fossgate, underneath Oshibi (somewhere else I’ve never been). It’s a tiny restaurant with just a few tables, which helps give it a friendly feel. It was empty when we arrived but afterwards two other tables came in – and everyone seemed happy.

I ordered a chicken taco, which was £4.50 for one or three tacos for £10.

I only ordered one as I wanted to try the street corn, as, when I was researching, I had read Ben from York on a Fork‘s review and he had mentioned how good it was. He wasn’t wrong. It was amazing! It’s basically a cheese dip made with jalapenos and served with homemade tortilla chips. The chips were heavily seasoned and very salty but glorious and made even better when dipped in the cheese dip. Quite frankly I could just sit and eat that all night.

My friend ordered the burrito which she was very happy with but possibly not quite as enamoured as I was with the street corn cheese dip.

I felt the prices were very good. My taco and cheese dip dish came to £9.50 together, while the burrito was £10.95. Soft drinks were just £2.50, or if you’re in for a more interesting evening, you could go for a cocktail for a fiver or two shots for a fiver. If I hadn’t been driving I think Tequila would have been appropriate!

Anyway, I have taken photos of the menus and the prices for you to have a look at.
