On Sunday we stopped in at The Mason’s Arms for a spot of Sunday Lunch. I’d had it recommended to me recently and as we were seeing a concert that evening at the York Barbican, I thought it was an excellent opportunity to try them out.
We booked a table a few days before in case it was busy (which it was). The staff serving were very welcoming and seated us in a room to the left of the main bar.
The pub is clearly popular. In our room there was a rugby match on a big screen, with a large group of lads watching. They were not unpleasant but it was a little loud, so I would avoid match days if that isn’t your thing.
There is a large menu with some interesting choices, but I was really there for the Sunday lunch. I ordered the roast beef, which came served with this huge Yorkshire pudding on top!
In the next photo, I have moved the Yorkshire pudding so you can see underneath. There was an excellent assortment of vegetables, including carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, runner beans and cabbage. There was also roast parsnips and roast potatoes as well as mash. I thought the roast beef was very tasty and the Yorkshire pudding was lovely and crisp on the outside but just stodgy enough in the middle to soak up gravy nicely. I have to say that I am not a veg fan, but it’s a perfect Sunday lunch for those who are!
My husband went for the fish and chips. He was very impressed as he says that not all pubs do fish and chips well. I can’t speak for the fish, but the chips I pinched were very good (proper chips)!
There was a large menu on the wall with specials (although these were not available on a Sunday). If I was to return I would go for the Yorkshire pudding with cauliflower cheese, roast beef and gravy and pair it with the chips, as these were definitely my favourite components!
Finally, there was a sign outside that said the pub is pet friendly. Finally – I’ll post some of the menus available on the table for you.
