I was in town on my own recently and needed a bit of lunch and a sit down. I passed by The Royal Oak on Goodramgate and took a spur of the moment decision to call in. I am so glad I did! I was warmly welcomed at the door and invited to take a seat in the lounge.

I had a lovely, cosy table next to the fireplace (nice and warm on a cold day in January).  I was given a full menu and a lunchtime special, you can see all the options here:

I chose the (smaller classics) gammon, egg and chips and a Fentiman’s Mandarin and Seville Orange Juice from the lunchtime deal.  It was lunch and a drink for £12.

The gammon was lovely and tasty and there were real chips which I always think says a lot about an establishment.

It’s not often I mention it, but (maybe because I was on my own and not chatting) I enjoyed the choice of background music, very laid back – think Mrs Robinson, California Dreaming and Waterloo Sunset.

There are several rooms to choose from as well as the lounge, including the front bar and snug downstairs and this very pretty room upstairs:

The Royal Oak is definitely one to try out if you are at this side of town.  I would definitely call in again, maybe I will take friends next time, but it is always reassuring to feel that you are comfortable on your own regardless.

They also (according to the a-frame board outside do two courses on a Monday to Thursday from 5pm.
