We were at the Theatre Royal this week and as I have been chatting to the people at Middle Feast recently, I thought it was a fantastic opportunity to try out their food (it’s just a three minute walk from the theatre, so very convenient for a pre-theatre dinner).
Middle Feast serve authentic Lebanese food in a cosy atmosphere, at very reasonable prices.
We thought we would try something a bit different and shared a starter of Kebba’s (minced meat served with fresh crispy mixed salad). You could taste lots of different spices, which were aromatic rather than spicy, and quite delicious.
We then tried the Shish Tawook, which was char-grilled chicken cubes marinated in special Arabic spices.
It was served with a very colourful crispy salad, rice flavoured with spices and chunky chips (you could choose rice or chips, but I went for a bit of both!). Coming in at just under £15 I thought this was great value for such a sizeable (and tasty) dish.
We also tried the Chicken and Halloumi cheese Shawarma. I’ll copy and paste the description as it describes it better than I can. ‘Shawarma is spits of fresh chicken or fresh lamb which has been marinated for over 24 hours in a blend of over 10 spices and yoghurt, then it is thinly sliced and served in khubz bread with your choice of fresh salad & sauces. Homemade falafels and halloumi cheese wraps served in khubz bread with choice of fresh crispy salad & sauces.’ Again, this was a really sizeable meal. A chicken shawarma on its own is just £10. It reminded me a little of Greek gyros.
Finally, for dessert we ordered baklava, which was deliciously sweet and crunchy.
On recommendation from our server, we also tried the carrot cake – and she was right to recommend it. It was moist with plenty of frosting (I hate a dry carrot cake!).
The restaurant was busy throughout our visit and is clearly popular and with good reason. The table space at the back is not large, but it’s cosy with a street-food vibe. The portions are large and tasty and well priced. You can also try things you may not have tried before.
Here are a few extra photos I took inside.
We were invited to visit and review. As always all opinions expressed are my own.
