I’m usually in York during the day rather than an evening, so tend to review lunch menus, but on Friday we had a rare evening out in York so I got to try something different.
I have been wanting to try Clucking Oinks on Castlegate. It’s in the building where Source was, right on the end where Castlegate meets Coppergate. Clucking Oinks started out at Spark (and is still there with a slightly more pared down menu than the Castlegate restaurant).
Our table was booked for 6:15pm on a Friday and I was surprised just how busy it was. Clearly other people had got the memo way before me! The servers were welcoming and friendly and very, very busy.

It’s good quality, tasty comfort food. They do fried chicken and they do it very very well!
We shared three smaller dishes between the two of us and it worked well. We went for a regular portion of Buttermilk Fried Chicken Strips:

And Hasha Carbonara (housemade hash brown, parmesan custard, parmesan crisp and smoked bacon).
So, what did we think? We can’t decide which was our favourite between the wings and the strips. The batter on both was perfect – light, tasty and crispy! I particularly liked the buffalo sauce on the wings and would also like to try the Chinese BBQ version. The Hasha Carbonara was good and cheesy, but I think if we were to return we would try one of the loaded fries dishes as I saw some coming out to other people and had serious food envy!
All in all, we were very impressed and would recommend you go and try them out for yourself. Price wise they are very pocket friendly. Our meal with a coke for hubby and water for me came to £27. A 10% service charge was added to bring our Friday night meal to a very reasonable £29.70.
Perfect location for the Grand Opera House too – but remember to book a table ahead of time!
