Since its founding in 1982, u3a has been a welcoming hub for lifelong learning, skill-sharing, and social connections. Designed for those in part-time or full-time retirement, u3a provides an enriching environment where members can explore new interests and engage in fulfilling activities.

u3a – Learn, Laugh, Live

Joining a u3a group is a fantastic way to stay active, expand your knowledge, and connect with like-minded people. With a growing membership of over 400,000, u3a plays a vital role in fostering community resilience and reducing social isolation and loneliness through informal learning.

The u3a movement champions well-being and promotes a model that values happiness and quality of life. By encouraging lifelong learning and social engagement, particularly among older adults, u3a helps build a sense of community and purpose, contributing to greater life satisfaction.

York u3a

York u3a offers an impressive variety of interest groups, covering everything from Accessible Apple Tech to Archaeology, Fly Fishing to Folk & Fairytales, and Sew Friendly to Spirituality—plus so much more! One enthusiastic member shared:

There are countless reasons to join York u3a—just as many as the number of creative groups available! I love the variety, friendliness, and openness. Even if you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for, you can always be inspired to start your own!”

The first ever u3a festival of learning, activity and fun took place at The University of York last July.  The mass gathering of u3a members who attended the event came from all over the country.  The aim of u3a has always been to unite individuals and provide opportunities to establish new connections and immerse themselves in an array of fascinating subjects, skills, and activities.  The festival cemented this ethos.  The next festival will again take place in York in 2026…so watch this space!

Membership is open to anyone who is retired or no longer in full-time employment. York u3a provides a welcoming space where members can enjoy educational, cultural, recreational, physical, and social activities in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Most group activities take place on weekdays between 9:00 am and 5:00 pm, at various locations in and around York. Whilst most activities take place during the week there are also events that take place at weekends, such as Saturday Talks and Socials. With around 130 groups to choose from, there’s something for everyone! Visit the Groups page for more details.

  1. It’s inspiring to see how York u3a continues to provide such a diverse range of opportunities for lifelong learning and social connection. The idea of combining personal development with community engagement is something that truly supports well-being, especially for older adults. As someone who believes in the power of continuous learning, I find it amazing that there are groups like “Fly Fishing to Folk & Fairytales” that cater to such a wide array of interests. It’s encouraging to see how this model not only fights loneliness but also builds a sense of purpose in later years. I’m curious, though—how do other u3a branches compare in terms of their activities and member involvement? Would love to hear about other similar initiatives!
