This week we visited Ate O’Clock on High Ousegate to review their set menu for lunch.
The menu is available Sunday till Thursday from 12 noon until 10pm, as well as Friday and Saturday from 12 noon until 4:45pm. I’ll be honest until I just checked that on their website. I thought it was just a lunchtime set menu but the fact that you can order it in an evening makes it extremely good value.
Two courses are £23.50 and three courses are £27.50. With the two course menu you can either order a starter and a main or a main and a pudding. We did a bit of a mix – one of my friends chose a starter while my other friend and I went for puddings (which were divine by the way).
It was my first time eating at Ate O’Clock but I have always read and heard good things about it. We have been in Social 8 which is next door for boozy brunch and you can read that review here.
It was a bright summer’s day so we chose to eat outside in an area with a retractable roof, but there are lots of seating inside too.
The restaurant has an elegant and stylish but comfortable atmosphere and the staff were all lovely and friendly.
Ok, onto the food. We tried the Chicken Liver Pate (with toasted soda bread, red onion marmalade
and dressed leaves):
Which went down very well as you can see!
For main courses we tried the Pan Roasted Rump of Beef (8oz rump of beef, served medium-rare on a bed of parmentier potatoes with carrots & a wild mushroom, shallot and red wine sauce). This was my dish and it was so very tasty and something a bit different to what I would normally order. I would thoroughly recommend it.
We also tried the Red Pepper and Pesto Linguini (with roasted red peppers, spring onion and confit cherry tomatoes). Just look at that cheese crisp thing (that’s my sort of thing!).
My other friend tried the Chicken Kyiv with smoked bacon mashed potato, cavolo nero (this is an Italian cabbage like kale – I had to Google it!), carrots & garlic butter.
For dessert we plumped for the dark chocolate brownie with honeycomb ice cream & salted caramel sauce. The photo below says it all really! This was lovely and gooey and not too marzipan – y (I don’t like marzipan and don’t usually order brownies because of this – but this one was delish!).
While my friend tried the Sticky Toffee Pudding with butterscotch sauce, seasonal berries and vanilla ice cream.
Ate O’Clock didn’t disappoint and made a lovely location for lunch and I can imagine it will be lovely on an evening for a special occasion too. It’s also very close to the Grand Opera House so would be perfect for a pre-theatre dinner too.
We were invited to dine for the purposes of this review – as always, all opinions are my own.
