York’s Chocolate Story have recently launched a fab new tour. How does a Gin and Chocolate tasting tour sound? It sounds pretty near perfect, I know!
The tour combines (most of) the regular classic tour with the addition of gin and chocolate pairings. The gin is from Hooting Owl who have a fabulous bar on Rougier Street where you can do more gin tasting if you would like. We tried out three different gins upstairs as part of the tour (where no photos are allowed, in case you are wondering):
- Hooting Owl Signature Gin: Paired with Rowntree’s first-ever chocolate, this pairing celebrates the humble beginnings of York’s confectionery legacy.
- Chocolate Orange Gin: Complemented by a slice of Terry’s Chocolate Orange, this duo pays homage to one of York’s most iconic chocolate treats.
- Sicilian Lemon Gin: Paired with a sweet treat inspired by York’s famous confectionery, this combination is a nostalgic nod to classic flavours.
Then we tried this one downstairs:
- Mystery Gin: Enjoy a seasonal surprise with this final pairing, offering a delightful twist on traditional gin and chocolate pairings.
I would firmly recommend not doing the tour on an empty stomach like I did, as at this point I was feeling a bit squiffy!
After all the gin tastings, when everyone was suitable merry we went on to make our own chocolate bars. We piped the chocolate onto a sheet and then added sweet toppings.
By the end of the tour these chocolate bars were ready to take home. Don’t have so much gin that you forget your chocolate bar in a random pub in York though (totally never happened to me…)
Finally, you get to watch chocolates being made (and you get to sample them too!).
I thoroughly recommend the tour, everyone was very jolly and had a good time, with lots of fun camaraderie. A great way to start a fun Friday evening in York!
We were invited onto the tour – as always, all opinions expressed are my own.
