Did you know that City Cruises do a fish and chip cruise? I have been on many cruises up and down the Ouse over the years but have never done the fish and chip cruise so we were quite excited to be asked to go along and try it.

City Cruises Fish and Chips Cruise

The fish and chip cruise runs Tuesday to Friday teatimes. We boarded our boat at 4:30, and sat at a table inside. There is seating on the top deck (which is outside) which will be lovely with some nice weather (something unfortunately we didn’t really have, although it wasn’t raining so that’s a bonus!)

There is a bar on board selling soft and alcoholic drinks as well as tea and coffee. There’s also snacks to be purchased. I can just imagine sitting on the top deck on a beautiful summer’s evening, watching the world go by with a glass of wine in my hand. As it was, I settled for a hot chocolate!

After we had got settled, the crew brought fish and chips from Mr. Chippy in town. These were delicious and, as you can see, a good size portion. There was salt and vinegar on the tables and you could help yourself to ketchup.

At around 5pm the boat set sail heading south of York towards Bishopthorpe. We passed underneath Lendal Bridge, sailed past Rowntree Park and then the old Terry’s Chocolate factory. We floated serenely down the river as far as the beautiful Bishopthorpe Palace, before the boat was turned, to make our way back.

Most of the time music was playing on the cruise (not too loud), but every so often the guide would give some information about where we were passing.

The cruise itself lasted around an hour and the experience lasted about an hour and a half. Due to the nature of the boat, it is not accessible for wheelchairs.

You board the cruise at King’s Staith (just near The Lowther), and are dropped off in the same place.

It’s a lovely way to see York from a different angle as well as being able to tuck in to some delicious fish and chips!
