This week we visited Fairfax House for the first time ever. It is a beautiful Georgian house on Castlegate overlooking Clifford’s Tower, with each room decorated in great detail of how it would have been in the 1760’s.
There is an event running to tie in with the York Ghost Week that particularly appealed to me, and as the kids are on half term (and kids go free!) I thought it was a perfect opportunity to visit!
To give you an idea what Annus Horribilis (horrible year) is all about:
Join us at Fairfax House this Ghost Week for the chance to win one of the exclusive York Ghost Merchant’s Black Box Edition Ghost – No. 22.
To take part you will need to step back in time to 1763 and experience the Fairfax family’s Annus Horribilis (horrible year). The house is full of clues to scrutinise, challenges to solve and ghosts to count, requiring all your senses! You will have to investigate carefully and guess correctly to be in with a chance of winning this exclusive Ghost.
We are a family that loves puzzles and have done every single escape room in York. I was a little worried that the trail might be a little perfunctory, aimed at smaller children and too easy. I am pleased to say that I was wrong. You are given a puzzle guide at the start of the trail.
In every room there was a puzzle to solve – and there were ten rooms in total so we really spent some time there. Some puzzles were fairly straightforward while others were fiendishly difficult and took some time to work out!
I have to say that setting up all the puzzles must have taken some not inconsiderable work!
At the end of the trail we popped our entry form into a box to go into a draw to win one of the York Ghost Merchant’s Ghosts. (So keep your fingers crossed for us – unless you have also entered and then I will forgive you not wanting us to win!).
Oh, and just so you know, there are free lockers to store your bags and coats as you wander around. I mention it as it was really useful, so I took a photo to remind me to tell you!
We were invited to visit and review. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.
