Review of the Afternoon Tea at The Grand, York. We love the afternoon tea at The Grand and our latest visit was no exception. It was my oldest teenager’s 18th birthday this week and I took him as a surprise (we both love afternoon tea!).
Afternoon tea is served in The Rise restaurant, which is large and airy and overlooks the Bar Walls.

Prices of the Afternoon Tea at The Grand, York
The afternoon tea we took is priced at £39.50 but you could also choose to indulge in the sparkling afternoon tea at £47.50, or why not push the boat out and go for Champagne Afternoon Tea at £52.50 per person. Kids up to the age of 12 are priced at £24.50.
Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan afternoon teas are also available on request.
Unlimited hot drinks are included with your afternoon tea. As well as the usual assortment of loose leaf tea like English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong and Darjeeling, amongst others, there is also a selection of speciality coffees like lattes, macchiatos and cappuccinos. Alternatively there is a hot chocolate (nice for at the end of your afternoon tea).
On each afternoon tea there is a selection of savoury items, then a scone course, followed by a cake layer (at least, this is the order I eat them in, you do you!)
For the savoury course, there were smoked beef brisket sandwiches served on tomato bread;
Coronation chicken (my favourite!):
Staal’s smoked salmon with dill crème fraîche and lemon gel (my son was perplexed by the lemon gel, which we originally took for tiny pickled onions (!) – but really enjoyed it).
Asparagus, celeriac and shallot quiche:
Or how about this pork and mature cheddar sausage roll?
After your savoury course there are plain and sultana scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream:
Finally, there is the beautifully presented patisserie layer.
Here you will find the beautiful Yorkshire White Rose (forced rhubarb compote, orange sponge and yuzu ganache):
Layered cake with black sesame, mango jelly, coconut buttercream and candied ginger.
Gariguette strawberry (Strawberry tapioca Bavarian, strawberry-range jam, vanilla biscuit).
Chocolate spiral with gold leaf!
I should also mention how lovely the staff were too. It’s a gorgeous afternoon tea in a lovely setting and a perfect one to celebrate a special occasion. Oh and they’ll even send you home with anything you don’t eat as well as some extra little pots of jam too!

We were invited to visit and review this afternoon tea. As always, all my opinions are my own.
