Afternoon Tea at The Grand, York – Review. We were recently invited to review the delicious new afternoon tea at The Grand, York. Your tea is served in The Rise restaurant, which is large and airy and overlooks the Bar Walls.
Prices of the Afternoon Tea at The Grand, York
Prices start at £34.50 for the regular afternoon tea, or you can indulge in an alcoholic drink too, the sparkling afternoon tea is £39.50, Hendrick’s afternoon tea is £42.50 or why not push the boat out and go for Champagne Afternoon Tea at £44.50 per person. Kids up to the age of 12 are priced at £22.50.
Gluten free, vegetarian and vegan afternoon teas are also available on request.
Unlimited hot drinks are included with your afternoon tea. As well as the usual assortment of loose leaf tea like English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Lapsang Souchong and Darjeeling, amongst others, there is also a selection of speciality coffees like lattes, macchiatos and cappuccinos. Alternatively there is a hot chocolate (nice for at the end of your afternoon tea).
On each afternoon tea there is a selection of savoury items. These include a sweet paprika croissant with egg, tarragon mayo and macerated golden raisins. I was a little unsure of the combination but I thought it worked well.
There was also Yorkshire Brie, dried tomato and artichoke-almond pesto on sourdough bread. Again, I was a little trepidous but really enjoyed it.
Or how about this Black Pudding Sausage Roll?
After your savoury course there are plain and sultana scones with strawberry jam, lemon curd and clotted cream.
Finally, there is the beautifully presented patisserie layer.
Here you will find Royal Battenberg Cake:
Mango Tartlet with tonka bean custard and burnt meringue. I didn’t even know what a tonka bean was (Google it – interesting!).
Below you will see Chocolate Craquelin and Greek yoghurt cheesecake. I liked the gold leaf on the Chocolate Craquelin but wasn’t as keen on the taste of cardamom inside it (not keen on cardamom – if you like it, you will love this!).
It was a really different afternoon tea into which a lot of thought has gone. It’s also a great opportunity to try some flavours you may never have come across. Not your average afternoon tea!
