It was a glorious summer’s day when we visited the York Pavilion Hotel for afternoon tea.

The hotel is popular for weddings and it is easy to see why. It has an elegant country house hotel feel to it, and yet has a very convenient location on Fulford Road.

York Pavilion Hotel Afternoon Tea

The building started life as a 17th Century farmhouse and (according to their website) was altered extensively in the late Eighteenth Century to become an elegant home. The hotel definitely has a Regency feel and wouldn’t look out of place on the likes of Bridgerton or in a Jane Austen novel (more tea, Mr Darcy?).

Afternoon tea is available every day from 12pm – 9pm. Ours was served in a beautiful room with high ceilings and French doors that led out into the gardens. It was a lovely, light and airy room that was perfect for a summer’s day but also there was an elegant fireplace so I can imagine just how cosy it would be in the winter too (and especially when decorated for Christmas).

Our afternoon tea was served traditionally on a three tier cake stand. We started with finger sandwiches made up of four different fillings – cheese and pickle, ham, egg mayonnaise and tuna. They were made with both white and brown bread. When we initially sat down we were asked if there were any allergies or food preferences and also asked if there was anything we didn’t want in the sandwiches (which could be handy if you had an aversion to fish, like me).

The sandwiches were all freshly made and served with a garden salad garnish.

After the sandwiches, there were two sweet courses. The middle plate was made up of cakes. One of the cakes I think was banana bread and the other, carrot and walnut then lastly there was a chocolate muffin. They were all very nice and we managed to bring some home (which is always a treat).

Lastly, there was a scone each with jam and cream. I do love a scone!

The afternoon tea at the York Pavilion Hotel is definitely one of the more reasonably priced teas at £19.95 per person for a regular afternoon tea, or for a touch more decadence you can add a glass of Prosecco too, for an additional £7.

We were invited to review. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.
