York is the perfect base for a holiday and there’s plenty to keep you busy in and around the city itself, but if you fancy venturing slightly further afield, there are some brilliant full-day trips that offer a change of pace. From vast landscapes to grand historic homes, these trips give you a wider taste of Northern heritage and scenery, all within comfortable reach of the city. Ideal if you want to experience the bigger picture.

Explore the scenic borders and discover Scotland’s historic estates

If you fancy exploring a little further north, a day trip into the Scottish Borders is doable, especially if you start early. The region is dotted with rolling hills, riverside walks and elegant historic houses that offer a completely different atmosphere to Yorkshire’s architecture. It’s always surprising how many people have never visited Scotland, so if you’re this close it makes sense to take advantage of the chance.

Many of Scotland’s favourite wedding venues are also open to the public in one form or another, so you can enjoy the grandeur even if you are simply exploring for the day. Think romantic turreted castles and vast country houses with long avenues and formal gardens.

It is a longer day out from York, and you have to be prepared for a good amount of driving, but if you enjoy history and dramatic scenery then the Scottish borders can be a memorable addition to your trip. You could even consider an overnight stay to break up the journey.

Visit the Yorkshire Dales for wide views and peaceful villages

Much closer to home, the Yorkshire Dales offer an easy full-day adventure without the need to be on the road for hours. The dramatic limestone landscape is dotted with dry-stone walls, small villages and traditional pubs, and there are plenty of short walks that do not require serious hiking gear.

Base yourself around Grassington, Malham or Hawes and spend the day exploring small shops, cafés and gentle footpaths. Malham Cove, Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar all make for a fantastic route if you like combining a bit of climbing with scenic views. It is an ideal escape if you want something quieter than York but still rich in character.

Head to the coast for castles, clifftops and fish and chips

If sea air calls to you, a trip to the Yorkshire coast makes a lovely change of pace. You can reach Scarborough, Whitby or Robin Hood’s Bay in a couple of hours, depending on traffic, and each offers something a little different.

Whitby is perfect if you want history and old-fashioned charm, while Scarborough is great for long beach walks, galleries and a classic seaside atmosphere. Those who enjoy dramatic scenery might prefer Robin Hood’s Bay, with its steep alleys and rugged shoreline. For a slower day, you can pick one coastal town and settle in for a wander around the town, a cliff-top stroll and of course the obligatory fish and chips – the best bit of any trip to the seaside.

With so many remarkable places within reach, a day out from York can be as low-key or as adventurous as you want it to be – the important thing is that you have fun!
