Here is something a bit different to my usual restaurant reviews! I visited Sam Olgar’s Hair Salon this week for a cut and highlights. It was badly needed as my hair is a bit thin at the moment and I was starting to look like a bit of an old witch lady, which is fine for Halloween but possibly not ideal for an every day look.
It’s a lovely salon on the corner of Bridge Street and Skeldergate. It’s a good size, and feels lively, but cosy, if that makes sense (not so huge that you feel a bit lost). It’s clearly popular though as (when I earwigged on the chatter – as you do) I could tell that Sam knew a lot of the ladies getting their hair done, which clearly meant return custom.
I am not a regular there but have been before and knew I would be in safe hands. I suggested that I came in for a press review and Sam kindly accepted.
Sam chatted with me before my cut, establishing what I wanted (obviously, what I wanted was thick luxurious hair, but I asked Sam for the next best thing which was a colour and cut to make my hair look a bit thicker while it is growing back in!). He made some suggestions about changing the colour a little as well as suggestions for the cut. He is clearly good at what he does and put me at my ease.
There are loads of photos on Sam’s Instagram page if you want to see what he does.
I had foil highlights put in and Sam and another hairdresser both put the foils in at once. If you have ever been for highlights you will know that this bit can take ages, but a) they were very deft and b) two of them halved the amount of time taken.
Talking of the other hairdresser – while my hair was being washed I received a head massage, which was, quite frankly, the best head massage I have ever had at a hair salon (and I’ve had a LOT). She was brilliant.
It’s an excellent salon and I fully recommend it. Oh, and very nice coffee with a Lindt chocolate on the side!
I was invited to visit and review – as always, all opinions are my own.
