I love Thai food so was pleased to be able to visit the new Thai restaurant on Lendal where the old Banks Music Room was – Giggling Squid.  It’s a really pretty restaurant (even the ladies’ loos are pretty – I regretted not taking my phone with me for pics, but the loos are downstairs and I was too lazy to go twice).

Giggling Squid York - Thai Restaurant Review

It’s a perfect venue for dining with friends as you can imagine with these big plush booths (I do love a booth).

Giggling Squid York - Thai Restaurant Review

The menu is very group friendly too with lots of small plate type dishes and sharing platters.  Watching what the waiting staff brought out, the sharing platters were very popular with the other diners.  So we took the cue and ordered the Street Food Sharer which comes with Hawker Style Pork Skewers, Salt & Pepper Squid, Spring Rolls, and Giggling Wings.

The menu on the website mentions a price of £29.95 for this, but that’s for three people, it was £19.95 for two (which is on the menu in the restaurant but isn’t mentioned online).

Giggling Squid York Review

Honestly, it was all delicious.  I loved the spring rolls and the pork skewers.  I left the squid to hubby because (if you have read any of my other reviews you will know – I don’t like seafood – I know, I know, I wish I did!).

We ate the platter as a starter then shared three more dishes.   We went for the Chicken Pad Thai (Flavoursome rice noodles with tofu, beansprouts, sliced red onion, Thai chives and crunchy peanuts.)  I thought the bowl of crushed peanuts was a nice touch.  This worked well for us as I like a liberal sprinkling of peanuts and hubby not so much!

We also tried the Sticky Chicken (A hearty bowl of crispy fried chicken. Bite-sized, sweet n’ sticky deliciousness) from the ‘Showstoppers’ menu which was not only really tasty but was sizeable and perfect if you are someone who likes to concentrate on meat without lots of veg cluttering up your dish!

Finally we ordered the Caramelised Pork Belly (Bite-sized pieces of sticky pork belly, wok fried with honey, chilli and tamarind. Garnished with pickled ginger, fried garlic and chilli powder and served with a side salad of peppers, jicama and spring onion).  Another winner.  If you like Chinese BBQ spare ribs, you will love this dish.

We had a great meal at Giggling Squid.  They were also very happy to bring me a takeaway container to take food home in too (which I always appreciate – I don’t like to waste food!).

We were invited to visit for the purposes of this review.  As always, all opinions are my own.
