Have you seen there is a new steakhouse opened in the building that was the Post Office on Lendal? It’s called Miller & Carter and we were invited to visit and review last week! They serve the most magnificent steaks that are either 30 day or 50 day aged and have been awarded ‘The Masters of Steak’ from the prestigious Craft Guild of Chefs. (I got that from their website, I don’t know anything about the Craft Guild of Chefs – but it does sound impressive!).
The staff were very friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu, and where the produce came from. We were made to feel very welcome. You will hear a bell rung every so often and this signifies that a customer has enjoyed their steak. When it is rung, a cheer goes up from the kitchen. It was (justifiably) rung frequently.
They have various menus and some special offers during the week, which I will cover below (definitely worth hanging about to read). We visited on a Thursday evening, when, as well as the regular menu, there is also a special menu. As you can see from the (slightly blurry!) photo below, you can order three courses for £34.50. This is available on a Thursday from 3pm or on a Sunday from 12 noon.
We ordered from this menu, as I knew this would be a popular option that people would be interested in, though we did go for some of the items with a supplementary cost. Indeed, the restaurant was quite busy that night with a reassuring buzz about it. The photo below was taken as we were leaving, in a quiet section and does not reflect how busy the restaurant was, but was a good opportunity for me to get a photo without anyone accosting me!
My husband ordered the Sweet & Smoky King Prawns with chargrilled harissa and garlic. You might know how I feel about seafood (I don’t like it!) but he does and enjoyed them!
I ordered the Sticky Chipotle Chicken bites with a chilli jam dipping sauce. The portion was large for a starter and they were delicious – I would return for these alone so would recommend you try them!
Then – the pièce de résistance* – The Steak Experience! We plumped for a sharing platter, the 28oz, 30 Day Aged Côte de boeuf (which, if you are unsure, is rib-eye with the bone still in). Rib-eye is my favourite! This (being quite magnificent) was a supplement of £8 per person.
All the steaks are served with parsley butter, a balsamic glazed tomato, onion loaf, a wedge of lettuce and a sauce. You choose how you would like your steak cooked, then your steak sauce, then what dressing you want with your salad and finally your side.
Again, apologies for the rather blurry menu image – I wasn’t even drinking that night!
So, this was our Côte de boeuf. We had it cooked medium as recommended and it was delicious! Perfect for a special evening.
We went for the beef dripping sauce (perfect for dipping your chunky chips in) and a classic peppercorn (as that’s also a favourite of mine).
We also tried the wedge with Caesar dressing and garlic croutons and the wedge with garlic mayo and Grana Padano – both were lovely, but did get a bit overlooked in favour of all the other lovely things!
For sides we opted for the thick cut chunky chips, and the Camembert mash – both of which I can recommend.
A final mention needs to go to the ‘onion loaf’ which is included with all the steaks. Quite frankly I could have eaten a whole plate of this, it was delicious.
Now, as part of the ‘three courses for £34.50 deal you get a pudding. If you are too full for pudding you can opt to go for a cocktail instead for an additional £2, which I thought was a great idea.
However, as absolutely stuffed as we were, we did want to try a pudding and went for the Triple Chocolate and Salted Caramel Cookie Pie to share. This had a cookie at the bottom (not that you can see the cookie in my photo!). It was covered with ice cream and – most importantly marshmallow fluff, which is a sort of gooey, sticky sweet confection. I loved it, hubby preferred the cookie, so (in the style of Jack Spratt and his wife) we were both happy! Oh and it came with a great shard of chocolate too!
Before I finish, I also wanted to mention the lunchtime deal which I feel is very good value. You can get two courses for £17.25 or three courses for £20.25 and the deal is valid Monday to Friday from 12-5pm. Hopefully you can see all the options below (clearly my phone was having a bad night on the taking-photos-of-menus front!
*I copied the spelling of the phrase from Google – obviously I know the phrase but the special characters were beyond me.
We were invited to visit and review – as always, all opinions expressed (and I have a lot of them!) are my own.
