Last week we were lucky enough to try out the lunch menu at The Botanist on Stonegate in York. The menu is the same in the evening so you can still sample the same dishes regardless of the time you visit.
If you haven’t tried The Botanist yet, it’s a comfortable modern bar and restaurant, with plenty of well spaced tables and a relaxed vibe.
The Botanist do some excellent cocktails – and you can visit just for drinks and don’t need to also be eating.
A few weeks ago, we reviewed the Bottomless Brunch at The Botanist (and we would recommend it).
For lunch though my friend tried the Lamb and Mint Pie with champ mash, mushy peas and gravy.
Which went down very well. I went for The Botanist Hot Board. This has a bit of a tapas feel, can be a sharer or main course and is made up of:
Patatas bravas
Chicken skewers
Cumberland Scotch egg
Whole garlic prawns
Baked Camembert with prosciutto
All of the different components were very tasty – and it’s nice to get lots of different flavours.
My other friend went for The Botanist ‘Famous Hanging Kebab’. Now, it has to be said this was the hit of the lunch and I had some serious food envy. She chose the chicken kebab with garlic oil, and sweet chilli chips.
When the kebab arrives the garlic oil is in a little dish at the top of the skewer. We were instructed to pour the oil from the dish onto the recess at the top of the skewer, which would let the oil drizzle down the kebab itself. I liked this bit of theatre, but I liked the fact that it then doused the already tasty sweet chilli chips with garlic oil. Quite frankly, I would return just on the strength of the sweet chilli/garlic chips alone – they were delicious!
Finally, we indulged in desserts and sampled the Cookie Dough with Oreos and vanilla ice cream.
Cheesecake with rose and hibiscus poached peach and pistachios.
And the Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter Pot with peanut and Biscoff crumb, caramelised banana and non dairy ice cream.
All of which polished off a lovely girls lunch in town!
The Botanist invited us to visit and review our meal. As always, all opinions expressed are my own.
