If you’re in York and fancy somewhere a little different for a drink and a bite to eat, Northern Monk Refectory York is well worth seeking out.
We called in yesterday to try out some of their beers alongside a pizza each. They had just opened so I managed to get some cracking photos before it filled up.
Tucked away on Little Stonegate, it’s a stylish craft beer bar in a gorgeous building. Inside, it’s relaxed and welcoming, with exposed brick, wooden floors and a fantastic bar lined with taps. There’s a great selection of Northern Monk beers, with around 20 ales, IPAs and more available on tap.
One of the highlights of our visit was trying the beer flights. They’re a brilliant way of sampling several different beers rather than committing to one pint – particularly when, like my hubby, you can never decide what to order!
If you are not a beer fan, there are plenty of other drinks to be had and you won’t be thrown out. I tried the Rhubarcello Spritz (think a spritz with Limoncello but rhubarb instead!)
The kitchen is home to Slice Culture, serving up Taproom Pizzas that are just the sort of thing you want alongside a cold craft beer. We tried the Pepperoni Hot Honey and the All Singing V3. Both were freshly made and delicious. They also have loaded tater tots, which I will try another time.
On the table there were a few flyers advertising different upcoming events and offers, such as Oktoberfest Guided Beer Tasting:
I was also impressed by the pizza and pint offer for £12 on weekday lunchtimes – bargain!
Another bargain is their happy hour cocktails for a fiver!
Northern Monk Refectory is a great addition to York’s food and drink scene. Whether you’re a dedicated craft beer fan or simply looking for somewhere relaxed to enjoy a pizza and a few drinks, it’s definitely worth trying.
