If you’re looking for a York stay with a bit more character than your standard chain hotel, The Churchill is well worth putting on your radar. Housed in a handsome Georgian mansion overlooking the city walls, it’s the sort of place that feels unmistakably York from the moment you arrive.
My mother-in-law recently stayed and I took the opportunity to take some photos while she was there! She stayed in room 109, a double room that was on the ground level, but down a few steps. I’ll add the photos I took in this article.
The Churchill Hotel, Bootham, York – Review
The building itself is a big part of the appeal. Inside, the atmosphere is smart but relaxed, with comfortable rooms and plenty of those little details that make a hotel feel like somewhere you’re actually pleased to be staying.
Then there’s the location. It’s brilliantly placed for exploring York on foot, with the twon centre just a few minutes walk away. You can head out to discover the Minster, wander the Shambles, potter along the city walls and be back at the hotel before your feet have had time to complain too loudly.
What makes The Churchill stand out, though, is the overall experience. The staff I came into contact with were lovely. It’s a hotel that embraces its setting rather than simply using York as a postcode. From the Georgian architecture to the historic surroundings, it feels connected to the city — and that’s exactly what you want from a weekend stay here.
The Churchill Hotel is a lovely choice for a York break if you want history, character and a cracking location, with a little bit of old-school grandeur thrown in. It feels like a proper York hotel rather than somewhere that could be anywhere in Britain — and for a city as full of character as York, that’s a definite plus.
