Bull & Co is a new American style burger and steak restaurant on Walmgate in York. The site used to be the Barbakan restaurant and is still owned by the same people. The Barbakan Restaurant has moved to the site of the former Blue Bicycle and is now known as The Blue Barbakan!
Bull & Co isn’t a huge place, but it has a busy but cosy vibe. There are several starter choices such as glazed ribs with BBQ sauce, crispy coated mac’n’jack and sweet corn soup.
We tried the sharer platter, which was huge (and too much for two people as a starter). It was generously portioned and included barbecue ribs, crispy panko wings, onion straws, skin on chips and crispy cheese bites.
It was also served with all these sauces and pickles. My whole party loved the sriracha sauce! I would recommend it for a table of three or four. It would also make a great main course too.
My other friends ordered the crispy cheese bites, which was again a good sized portion.
The Burger Selection at Bull & Co, York
The burger menu at Bull & Co is extensive and includes seven different styles of burger, including a vegan burger. My friends chose the New Yorker (Toasted Haxby bun, 6oz homemade beef patty, pastrami, sauerkraut, dill cucumber, red onion, Monterey Jack cheese and mustard mayo sauce).
Another one of our party ordered The Classic with cheese (Toasted Haxby bun, 6oz homemade beef patty, tomato, gherkin, lettuce, crispy red onion and house sauce).
Finally, my vegetarian friend ordered the vegan burger, The Forest (Toasted Haxby bun, oyster mushroom, dill cucumber, pickled carrot, red onion and vegan black garlic mayo).
You can also choose from four different cuts of steak. I was very tempted by the 16oz t-bone steak but it was a little out of my price range, and besides I only just managed to finish the 10oz rib-eye I did order! Speaking of which, it was accurately cooked – I asked for medium – very tender and well seasoned. There was a lovely char-grill to it, but perhaps a little too much flavour of rosemary for me. An excellent quality steak though, and one I would recommend.
If steaks and burgers are not your thing, you could also choose loaded fries or salad. They also do some impressive sounding milkshakes and have a kids menu too.
A great new addition to Walmgate’s impressive restaurant list.
